Construction on the railroad began that year to haul lumber from the mountain to the mill in town. Gear driven Shay engines were used for their ability to haul heavy loads on steep mountain grades. Engine number 5, the oldest of these locomotives, has continued to chug up Cheat Mountain for nearly 115 years.
